 What is Meditation?

Meditation is a different state of consciousness – not wakefulness, not sleep. It’s more like daydreaming. In Meditation the brain waves slow down from wakeful Beta waves to Alpha waves.
Meditation is natural, normal and safe. It’s a way of giving the mind and nervous system profound rest. More rest than is achieved in sleep.

Why Meditate?

Meditation brings a deep state of rest to the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind as well as the nervous system.
Many Doctors believe that up to 80% of all illness is stress based. Stress is caused by outside triggers, but the stress is internal – to deal with effectively, our attention must be turned inwards. Meditation switches off the body’s stress response system. It’s the most effective long-term stress release tool of all. Meditation creates the perfect state for healing to occur.
With practice, meditation brings feelings of peace, clarity and well-being. We feel less anxious, less hostile, more at ease, more effective.

How do I Meditate?

The method is simple.
Be warm, comfortable, quiet, shoes off. Sit still, back straight but relaxed, chin slightly tucked in to lengthen the neck, both feet on the floor, hands palms up on the knees, eyes closed.
Spend a few minutes relaxing, release muscular tension. Follow the breath for a couple of minutes, don’t alter it, and watch it slow down.
Now, focus on the sensation of the breath in the nostrils. The breath feels cool as you breathe in, warmer as you breathe out. Just feel it for a few seconds. Now on every out breath, mentally say the word ‘One’. The sensation of the breath and the word are your focus. When the mind wanders – and it will! as soon as you realize that you are thinking – simply go back to your focus. Over and over and over and over again…….optimum practice 15 minutes morning and evening.

It’s not easy.
Your mind will wander every few seconds. Bring it back to focus! Nothing happens, you don’t feel anything. You think you are doing it right. You think it is a complete waste of time. You absolutely know that you’re not improving and you can’t do it and you don’t want to anyway, it’s hopeless, it’s boring!! Your mind has been in control for 20, 30, 40 years. It takes a while to take control of it. Have complete faith. Meditation works. Just keep doing it. In 3 or 4 weeks you will be a different person.
